Facts about UV-Rays


UV rays are often considered to be hazardous to the skin. But a closer look shows that this is not always the case. On the contrary: Sunlight has many positive effects on the body, which many people are unaware of.

In general, there are 3 different types of UV rays: UVA, UVB and UVC rays. UVC radiation is absorbed in earth’s atmosphere and therefore, only UVA rays and UVB rays reach us. These differ in their wavelength. The shorter the wavelength, the higher energy the UV rays have. Long-wave UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin but have less energy. The most dangerous is short-wave high-energy UVB radiation, which is responsible for sunburns on the top layer of the skin. These UV rays can also cause damage to the genetic material (DNA) with long-term exposure. However, the skin has its own enzymes, which can repair minor DNA changes. Therefore, the harmfulness of UV rays happens only when the skin’s own protective mechanism is broken. So, it all depends on the duration and intensity of sun exposure.

Especially important is the right UV protection. With longer sun exposure, Sun Protection Factors (SPFs) extend the skin’s own protection and successfully protect against the adverse effects of UV rays. Choosing the right UV protection is dependent upon your skin type. The UV protection factor multiplies the skin’s natural protection time to determine the total daily UV protection against UV light exposure. Light skin types have a weaker UV protection mechanism than darker skin types and, therefore, require a higher UV protection factor in order to stay in the sun longer. To ensure continuous UV protection against UV light, SPFs should always be reapplied after exercise or swimming.

In addition to the relaxing effect of a tanning session UV rays also have other positive effects on the body. The ultra violet radiation contained in the UV rays activates breathing, stimulates blood circulation, metabolism and glandular activity and stimulates the body’s defenses. The UVB rays also stimulate Vitamin D production. This is essential for healthy bones, muscles and immune system. So long as one is aware of the correct duration and intensity of sun exposure outweigh the negative effects of UV rays.
